Kabaneri of the Iron Fortress is one of the best anime series in 2016. Kabaneri is a Japanese word that means “iron fortress”, and Kabane are zombie-like creatures that live on Kabaneri Island. The Kabane are usually repelled by humans with guns or swords, but they’re evolving to become more than just mindless walking corpses – they can now move fast and infect people with their bite. It’s up to Ikoma, who has been trained as an engineer for the steam-powered weapons called “Tsuranuki Zutsu,” to find out how these Kabane have evolved into such deadly beings!

The anime was co-released by Crunchyroll and Funimation on Blu-ray and DVD in the United States, with 12 episodes and streamed on Amazon Prime Instant Video service.

Plot of the Series

The series begins with a spread of virus has infected, which turn humans into Kabane. The Kabane are usually repelled by humans with guns or swords but they’re evolving to become more than just mindless walking corpses – they can now move fast and infect people with their bite.

Kabane are aggressive, undead creatures that resemble humans, but are deprived of human intelligence and self-consciousness. Kabane take on a wide variety of different forms: some look like decaying corpses with their skin in tatters; others have an emaciated appearance that looks barely alive. They cannot be defeated unless the glowing golden heart, which is protected by a layer of iron, is pierced, or an important body part is completely severed.

The series follows Ikoma, a steam smith and engineer who finds himself travelling to the last human. Kabane are attacking humans and the Kabaneri who can make them. Ikoma joins forces with a young woman named Mumei, who is a Kabaneri that has been trained to kill Kabane. Together they join in the defense against Kabane attacks while defending their territory from other human survivors or “Wagas”.

The Kabaneria of the Iron Fortress is a post-apocalyptic world where part of humanity survived by isolating themselves in stations called “stations”, which are surrounded by huge walls to keep out marauding Kabanes, infected humans who can only be killed by destroying their brain or severe injuries.

Characters in the Series

Ikoma is the main character of Kabaneri of the Iron Fortress. He is a master engineer who was hired by government to build steam weapons for fighting Kabane, as well as help with other engineering tasks. Ikoma starts off his journey with Kabaneri Mumei and her group in order to find out how he can be cured from turning into one of Kabane.

He builds a weapon to fight against Kabane called piercing gun. 

Mumei 

She is a mysterious character known to be a Kabaneri and she is traveling with Kabaneri group in order to find out the reason for her Kabane condition.

Mumei starts off the series as a Kabaneri who has been given an incomplete blood transfusion that leaves her vulnerable to Kabane bites, and not strong enough to fight them on her own. 

Her birth name is Hozumi. She later develops interest for Ikoma.

The series highlights other characters like Ayame, Kurusu, Takumi, Sukari, Suzuki and many others.

The series was directed by Tetsurō Araki and written by Ichirō Ōkouchi. The series was developed into three theatrical films from 2016 to 2019. The soundtrack is composed by Hiroyuki Sawano.

It is one of the best anime series to watch in 2016. It has been awarded Newtype Anime Awards for Best TV Anime, Best Soundtrack, Best Character Design, Best Screenplay and Best Studio in the year 2016.
